For me that sounds like a cardioid mic placed close, but the nearfield
bass lift not equalised away. It also has a bright presence peak. To cap
it all, some unfortunate reverb has bee applied.
This stuff sounds impressive on first listen, but soon gets boring
because it is all one colour. Much more ultimately satisfying to go for
the real sound of the guitar.

Should have added, this was done with a pair of mics, both directed
somewhat at the sound hole, and the left one was positioned about six
inches closer to the guitar than the right, making for a slight comb
filter effect.

This not stereo-miked. This is dripping with bad fake reverb.

An organ in a well designed church. The concept of reverb on a guitar is
artificial, so you might as well use a box of electronics (and good
taste). If you want a "big" guitar sound, you record a lot of guitars,
or one guitar played several times. They don't yet make good boxes that
do that.

Not necessarily. Play a guitar in a big church, you'll get plenty of reverb.
Totally natural.

On the other hand, put a pair of cardioid mics (SM81s will do with the
gentle bass rolloff dialed in) parallel to one another, one facing the 16th
fret of the fingerboard, the other down below the bridge, both about 6" from
the instrument. Set them to the same level and pan them hard right and left
respectively. You'll get a *huge* guitar sound. Not anything like realistic,
but huge. Make sure the player doesn't move, though, or the movement will be
as exaggerated as the guitar image.
Peace,
Paul

A room that sounds good with microphones in it. Artificial reverb never
sounds like the real thing. A lot of this is because the instrument produces
different sounds in different directions, and the room mashes them all up
together. Electronic reverb boxes take a sample from a single place in space
(or two at most) and try and synthesize the room sound from that.

Bob, have you listened to any of Laurence Juber's recent recordings, or
those of Ed Gerhard? If you have and you like that sound, I can offer
some insights into their recording techniques.

Yes, I would love to get an idea of how they are achieving that sound!

Ed Gerhard actually used to post here occasionally... he is a good fellow,
and I bet a google search on the group would bring some stuff up.
