Free MP3 recording sw?
Anybody know of any free MP3 recording software that records directly to an
MP3 file and has a record level meter? Need to do a recording for a
conference to a laptop as we don't have enough CD recorders available.
Thanks.

Reaper will do that nicely.

It has a 30 day trial period, which would work fine for what the OP asked
for. After that you need to buy it or stop using it.

Doesn't record directly to MP3, but will output to MP3. I assume you
don't have an issue where you need to record for so long you're going to
run out of disk, though even the moderate disk on my system can easily
store over a day of continuous WAV.
Audacity is also a very reasonable editor.

Use Audacity.
It doesn't record direct to MP3 (it use .au format instead) but
nonetheless, after you add the LAME DLL and tell Audacity where to find
it, it will export to MP3.
Its got a level meter and it also creates a waveform envelope during
recording. You can do basic editing in Audacity and it won't cost you a
penny.

Record with Audacity.

While I love Audacity, it doesn't record directly to MP3. Recording
directly to MP3 is a continuous operation. In other words, if the computer
crashes/shuts down in the middle of a recording, the file is still there.
Converting to MP3 takes time to do and we are also pushing to get these
recording onto CDs. We also need to cut the time it takes to get these to
production. As it is, this may no longer be a issue as my laptop is about
to die. Last night it took a few minutes to open Firefox. Unless I locate
an available laptop I may have to buy a portable MP3 recorder.

Well, not directly. Little does.

I don't know how Audacity recovers, if at all.

Then maybe you want a CD recorder.

Let me recommend the Microtrack. If I had your gig, that would be my tool of
choice.
However, you can't burn CDs directly with a Microtrack or anything like it.
You still have to save the file onto a PC when the session is over.

Yes, but I am planning for a plan B. They just bought one, but what about
if it fails? You may ignore failures, but I don't want to miss recording a
session because of equipment failure. Pros use backup plans.

A CD recorder is cheaper and bypasses the need to download to a computer
and then burn to CD. I just saw a DVD recorder at Walmart a few months ago
for only $49. For the few recording sessions we have that is a much better
buy. Afterwards I could burn my VHS movies and such to DVD. If I go the
other route Walmart has am MP3 recorder with a line-in for only $40.
