Headphones recommendations?
I often record in a theater where the sound I'm recording is also coming out
of the theater speakers.
One time the audio staff gave me a wrong audio mix, it had some sound but
not all. It took me a minute to notice because the missing sound could be
heard from the speakers leaking through the headphones. I had to push my
cheap headphones closer to my ears to confirm something was missing.
I'm looking for headphones with better isolation and more rugged than a pair
of walkman headphones -- they all broke after getting tangled in the cable
bag and being yanked on a few times.
Often the sony mdr 7506 is recommended for general purpose monitoring. Is
there anything more modern that is cheaper and does the job, or the same
price and does a better job (e.g. more isolation)?

For maximum isolation and minimum price, buy a cheap pair of earbuds and a
set of ear protection used when firing guns. With a slightly larger budget
you can get the active ear protection.
Unbeatable sound deadening. Minimal cost. Won't sound the best.

Etymotic in-ears, with the custom earmolds. David Clark hearing protectors
over top of the in-ears. There is no substitute.

Scott, wasn't the OP asking for something in the same price range as
7506s? I won't argue that your suggestion isn't excellent in terms of
sonic quality and isolation, but I'd guess it's a much higher cost.
I've never been crazy about 7506s - although they'd be a much better
choice than typical Walkman headphones. Recently I've become a fan of
Sennhesier HD280s. I think they sound great, and have much better
isolation than many units out there. And the street price is about
$100 a copy - a bit more than 7506s, which IIRC go for around $80, but
IMO well worth the difference in price.
But hey... we're talking headphones here. You'll find a lot of
different opinions about which ones sound best! :)

I have AKG K240, K270, K271, K141, Sennie HD280 (great iso, but like smelly
plastic vices), 7506s (great analytical due to high'presence, but tiresome
as hell) , and my current favourites AT ATH-M50 which are good iso, great
tone with similar bass impact as the Sonys but listenable for extendable
periods, even for recreational listening.

Re: Headphones recommendations?
I just bought a pair of AT M50's and I find them to have something
funny going on in the low-midrange. I don't know that I trust their
low end that much. My favorite headphones for checking mixes are
still Sennheiser 580's but they don't isolate much. I've been
planning on trying the M50's for cue mix. I think bass players and
drummers will love 'em!

It is, yes. But if you want enough isolation to do the job he is describing,
that it the only way to get it. I have tried a lot of things in the past
and it's the only thing I have made work.
The cheaper Etymotics aren't all that expensive right now... I am seeing
the E-6 phones selling for $50 or so, and the isolation on the things is
pretty good. Not as good as the custom earmold models, mind you, but
it's a step toward it.

The thing is, sometimes "best sound" isn't the most important parameter
for a given job. I find the 7506 really shrieky and pitched up; they
exaggerate tape hiss and low level noises a lot. Consquently I love them
for tape editing, but I'd never try and use one to judge balances on.
The original poster has an application where he needs isolation at all cost,
and good sound is nice to have but it doesn't help you without isolation.

A number of people here are particualrly found of (let me read the model
number off the phones right here before me) Audio Technica ATH-M50. I
found them for a 7506-like price as new equipment on eBay.

Etymotic ER-4S earplugs.
An In-Ear-Monitor Tx/Rx is very useful, but a good stereo one is very
expensive. A good stereo IEM for the price is the german LD Systems MEI100
(look for LD Systems in Ebay), but the earplugs are not very good; use the
Etymotics. Rx runs on two AA-size batteries. Life is about 8 hours, but use
rechargeable batteries for your convenience.
