Help me get this snare sound
OK geniuses

How would YOU get this snare sound

http://youtube.com/watch?v=IEnRAeHtogk&feature=PlayList&p=D243E528EA1ECDB0&index=3

with

Yamaha DG signature piccolo snare tuned up PDT
top mic Audix F10 or Sm 57
bottom mic Audix ADX 90 Phase reversed
thru a Mackie 1604
Lexicon MX200

I'm real close but using drum hall or vocal hall reverb on the FX adding the
right amount of decay sonically lowers the pitch of the snare
Yes , I cut everything below 75 Hz ad a little high end & cut the mids a
pinch..
My next trick is to route the FX back to a channel on the board so I can EQ
the FX ????
Any ideas tips suggestions smartass remarks ????

Try adding this to what you are doing:
Get a big room, mic the snare on top and put a mic in the room. EQ the room
mic and blend to taste.

Hi there, I think Phil and freinds came up with the gated snare sound
in the early 80's.
Try of course to get your snare sounding like this without the
reverb. Then add reverb. Room Or hall 1 to 2 seconds.
Put a noise gate on the output. Set the trigger input to the snare.
Set the hold time for 100 to 300 ms. I would guess 250ms. set the
release for 10 to 100 ms. again 20 ms is my guess.
Phil and Peter G discovered the gated snare and everyone in the
80's used it. also you can eq the verb to accent the cracking sound or
the kaah type of sound. your example I am pretty sure sounds the way
it sounds because of a noise gate.

More specifically, "Phil Collins and friends"(lower case "F"), which you did
mention later.

Not to be confused with Phil Lesh's post GD projects officially named "Phil
Lesh and Friends", but often shortened to "Phil and Friends".

Yep, and if you're after that gated snare sound, a tightly set gate, and lots
of reverb!!!

Just drown that sucker in reverb after gating it and you're there.

Quite frankly, I was happier when drummers wanted to go back to a little more
natural drum sound. I never cared much for that drum sound.

I agree.... I hATE Phil Collins drum sound!
Its like this reverse enveloped gated thingy & it SUCKS....
I dont think this TOTO example comes anywhere near that Phil Collins sound.
Someone on this board best described it as a Kaah sound with a nice tail..
THATS what I'm going for...a natural pop with a little Kaah No thud & no
reverse gates....
I tried routing the Verb thru a ch so as to EQ it I couldnt tell any
difference... I still cant get the "bryan Adams" deep sound out. ( thats a
nice sound but not for all around use)

It was much better with Brand X.

he's a talented drummer, it must have been the drugs because there was
way overuse of the suck knob in the 80's, just listen to some Clapton

Agrred. I think it was forms outside disco discovering paint by numbers music.
Unnatural reverbs, instrumental tones that didn't breathe, quantized to death.

Phil is a good drummer, and on sessions he's done for others and early Genesis
I dug his drumming. I just didn't like his '80's drum sound. THat gated reverb
thing didn't sound natural.

A lot of guitars back then seemed to be into guitar tones that were dry and
lifeless to me as well.

I like the drums in The lamb lies down...
Nice album in general too.
