Times are tough all over. I just got a notice from Verizon that they're
dropping some news hierarchies. That, so far, doesn't affect me since
rec.audio.pro is the only Usenet newsgroup I read and they're keeping
the whole rec. group (as well as the rest of the "big-8": comp.*
humanities.* misc.* news.* sci.* soc.* talk.*

I suppose what they're really saying is that they're dropping the alt.
groups because that's where all the sex and copyright violations are.

Mike:
Verizon customer here as well. So that email wasn't a scam,
unfortunately. I posted a warning about this in another newsgroup I
follow (alt.binaries.pictures.rail - railroad pictures) and somebody
mentioned the rates were going up too. Received nothing about that
recently. I have my phone and internet (3 meg dsl) through them. It's
not only porn in the alt hierarchy - there's music groups, non-porn
picture groups, games groups, etc.

Yeah, I do have phone and DSL (though the lowest speed, 768 kbps) with
Verizon. When I got my phone bill last month I noticed that my DSL had
jumped from $14.95 to $21.95 and I hadn't received any notice of that
either. I called them and they told me that they sent me two e-mails
about the rate increase, but I didn't get either one. They gave me a
break and changed me to the annual contract rate of $19.95 per month,
but that's a 26% hike, and I don't expect that I'm going to get a 26%
cost of living increase in my retirement pension any time soon.

Still, it's the cheapest Internet deal I can get around here (I don't
have cable TV), so they have me by the balls.

Do y'all not understand how easy it is to get really good Usenet
service, regardless of ISP?

For example (I use this one): www.individual.net/

well it is now,.... but if the trend is started by the big boys and
then the others follow suit, it may not be so easy in the future..

It might be different where you are, but in these parts you can get cable
internet without buying cable tv. You do have to be in the service area
though, and the cheapest net-only package is still $25/month.

Cable internet-only is not at all cheap here in Albuquerque, and our
provider is the nationally dominant one. Comcast actually charges more
here for their Internet-only package than they do for Internet plus basic
Cable TV. So I have the latter, despite never having owned a TV in my
life. With tax it is currently $58.31/month, without modem rental. My
house is too far from my phone switch to allow useful DSL until recently,
but now they have apparently installed some form of neighborhood repeater
box (don't remember the real name), so I'm actively considering DSL. Even
the faster regular service ("up to" 7 Mb/sec) would be less than 2/3 of my
cable price here.

That's also the home of religious, political and conspiracy discussion.

Speaking of conspiracy, to intentionally limit open public conversations is
more than just a bit questionable... it would be a simple matter to screen
the subject matter of the 'alt' groups in order to eliminate porn and binaries.
Verizon is not the only service dropping the 'alt' heirarchy... it's happening
all over the country.

And a lot of smaller site never carried altnet in the first place.

It's also the home of alt.audio.pro.live-sound.

..oh, you said that already.
