 I bought a Zoom H2
I bought it as a composition aid. I can set it by my tea cup in the
morning while sitting by the wood stove in the kitchen, visiting with my
wife and sharing with her my early-daily musical musings. She loves
guitar music. ("Good thing, hunh?", she says with a twinkle in her eye.)

I can take it in the car and not lose those lines, lyrics or melodies,
that come out of nowhere and go right back there if not corraled
quickly.

But, damn, if this l'il sucker isn't just WAY better than I anticipated.
So far I've only a few test trackings done, all at 16/44. The first
takes were the morning capture (and it's working fine for that; I have a
Latinesque instrumental coming together over the last few days, and also
some kind of country pop song, all the good ideas of which are now
stashed on the laptop, dragged 'n' dropped from the H2). Those were
taken stereo with the "front" 90º mic pair. I was startled at the high
quality of the sound., just the basic "no shit??" kind of reaction.

I do note the USB xfer rate is tedious, and a card reader would help.

Last night I took it to a trio rehearsal aand ran it in 4 ch "surround"
mode.

There was a dining room table with Susie Wilson, vocalist, along one
long side at midpoint, and Ken Cawley, slide resonator player, and I,
guitar and vocal, on the other long side.

I put the H2 midway between us with the 90º pair aimed at Susie and the
120º pr aimed at Ken and I.

So Susie is centered in a stereo capture and Ken and I are caught in a
wide stereo image, bot not panned-to-the-sidewalls.

When auditioning directly from the H2 their mix/decode/whatever does an
amazing job of combining all that into a stereo playback.

Via the Senn HD280's there is an uncanny feeling that one is in the
middle of all this.

The 512 MB card doesn't offer a lot of 16/44 x 4, though; surround mode
ate it for a snack without burping. I'm looking forward to the 4 GB SDHC
card arriving today.

Based on my use of this recorder so far I will now stand up in front of
y'all and commit professional audio heresey:

Henceforth, the eternal newbie questions, what cheap mics, what pre,
blah blah, if asked me by any solo artist now, will get the
recommendation to get an H2 and learn:

- how to position oneself in a room
- where to put the "mics"
- how to deliver a balanced performance

Manage that well and this tiny inexpensive box will deliver silly good
quality. For two hundred bucks one gets two pair of decent cheap
cardioid condenser mics, bettter than just "okay" conversion, both in
and out, AFAICT from listening directly to the output in the cans, and
portability. Nevermind the interesting surround function.

Many fine recordings, historically, were made using kit with resolution
nowhere near what this puppy offers. In my view, the beginner kit game,
for a soloist, is over: this is the tool, and if one gets it right on
the input side one will have usable tracks.

Hell, I haven't even tried it @ 24 bits yet.

Bah! Waste of memory space. ;)

Glad you're liking it. I have one coming here myself, in time for
music camp season. Placement and balance at jam sessions will be kind
of arbitrary (where it fits and won't get stomped on) but I might try
it hanging upside down from a mic stand.

The included mounting accessories work just right. It stands up proudly
on the tripod, and the tapered handle fits right into a standard mic
mount, whether clip or slip-in.

I'm going to track a trio gig with it Thursday evening. I'm going to
take a big plastic clip I have that takes a standard mic mount, fasten
that to a little decorative member above and in front of the performance
space, and put the tapered handle in the mic clip.

It weighs almost nothing. Two AA batteries seem to triple the weight.

Do those come with the h4 as well? I"m thinking about the h4, not that I need
fourtrack capability, just want the balanced connections, especially xlr as I"d
prefer to be able to use a quality microphone that needs phantom with it.

THat should be quite doable from what I hear.

One of my apps for one of these little portables will be some quick and dirty
voice work where I don't want to have to power up the remote truck <g>. tHe
other will be classical gigs that don't warrant the truck because the client
doesn't want to pay that sort of money.

The H4 comes with a kind of funky cradle with a threaded tripod socket
that you attach to the recorder with a Velcro strap.

Richard, it's not worth it. If you want to use decent mics you might
as well connect them to a decent preamp, then record the preamp
output. Both the H4 and H2 have a pretty high sensitivity (low
tolerance) line input, even with the sensitivity switch set to its
lowest position. They'll both clip with anything above +10 dBu going
into the line input. I put a couple of 15 dB pads in a little box with
RCA jacks on the output side and 1/4" phone jacks on the input side
and use that to connect to a mixer or mic preamp. Much as I hate 1/8"
phone jacks and I'd rather have XLRs or at least 1/4" jacks (like the
M-Audio Micro Track) on the recorder, I've never actually had one fall
out on me.

Just set the H2 on the table and talk away. As long as the room isn't
too live it'll do a good job. It works nicely for interviews.

<Hmmm> Was wondering about that.

One of my applications of course would be the usual stereo pair at a venue. I
guess a couple channels of decent pre would be in order for that.

THe other, quick voice-overs. THere again, I guess a good mic pre would be in
order, as my radio room/office at my new home is a little more live than I'd
like. This may change acoustically once I build workbench and do some other
things, but at present still way too lively. Hard concrete walls, etc. Hence
something like an re20 will still be my vo mic of choice.
