Inexpensive Stereo Mics For Acoustic Guitar
If you had to pick from a matched pair of the following mics for Acoustic
Guitar which would you pick and why?
1. Studio Projects C4
2. AT 4041
3. Rode NT5
I know the Schoeps CMC641, Josephson's, etc, are great but this is for an
amateur who doesn't have a lot of money. He runs his current mics into a
Mackie 1202 with Sonar, and wants to do stereo recording for Acoustic
Instruments, mostly Martin Guitars and Violins. Thanks!

Re: Inexpensive Stereo Mics For Acoustic Guitar
Bob;
I was shopping around for a pair of SDC's and arrived at the RodeNT5's after
hearing them. Anyone will tell you here to go with what your ears say. The
AT4041's and NT5's should be a good choice for anything stings. You may
also want to look at a pair of AKG C535EBs, I have one I use on HiHats but I
have been told they are nice and flat and do well as a pair of SDC's (even
though they are listed as a "handheld vocal mic").
Hope this helps.

I have a pair of C4's and they're ok - better than I expected, and they get
a quite a bit of overall use for guitar and other instruments.
For acoustic guitar, though, they'll never come close to beating my
Josephsons. The C42's would certainly be worth paying off over time if
you can make the investment.

I'm an acoustic guitarist, and I've been very pleased with the NT5s.

I'd rather have one Josephson C4 than two of any of those microphones you
list. Why do you need two mikes anyway?

Scott,
He wants to learn all the different approaches to Stereo recording and wants
to experiment. Also, to get a half decent recording with the home setup he
has. He's under no illusions that his setup is going to produce
"professional" results.

Get him two of the Behringer omnis, or any of the other identical mikes
sold under different names. They are cheap, but they'll let him get a
sense of what is possible and how things work. When he gets frustrated
with them, he can buy the Josephson.
You really cannot stereo mike a close-miked guitar. You can put two mikes
on it, and there are some good reasons to do so sometimes, but don't think
it has anything to do with stereo miking. It will not produce a real stereo
image.

I have a pair for sale they sound fine nearly identical to the Okatva
012 I just sold. I also had a pair AT4041 which I happily used till I
got then Joesephson matched pair. I 'll use these till I can afford a
pair of Schoeps. I also have a pair of older AKG451 which are good and
sound sil\milar to the 4041 in my opinion.
if your friend is interested in the 603s drop me a line paul at

Scott,
Is it possible to explain this? Or will it take a book to do so?
