Rackable 8 ch mixer
I'm looking for suggestions for a rackable 8ch mixer to use for a synth
rack - stereo out from this mixer to go to the main board. Ideally this
would be 3 rack spaces or less, transparent and under $500. I know about the
Ashly MX508 which seems like a good choice but was wondering what else might
work better. I don't need alot of bells and whistles.
Thanks in advance,
Neil R

The Ashly's not a bad piece at all ...
I use a Soundcraft Delta rack but it's way more than 3 spaces.
I also have a nice little Rane single space 8x2 ch, an SM82.
No EQs. It's clean though.

It depends on how much of a mixer you want. If you just need level and
pan controls to a single stereo output, Alesis has a new 1 rack space
model, the Multimix 8, that has 8 stereo line level inputs (16 inputs
total) with a mic input on one channel. It has level and pan, plus a
single auxiliary send (which can be used as either an effect send or a
monitor feed) and stereo auxiliary return (could also be used for
intermission music playback). Don't know the price but all their stuff
is pretty cheap and it's reasonably well built. It's brand new and
probably won't be available for a couple more months.

If you need something similar right now, the Alesis Multimix 12R has
been around for several years and costs $300. It's a bit bigger, 3 rack
spaces, but offers 8 mic/line inputs plus 2 stereo line inputs, two band
EQ, and two aux sends, plus slide faders rather than rotary knobs for
level controls.

Do you need eight stereo inputs or eight mono? Do they need to be pannable?
Do you need EQ?
I can say very good things about the little 1U high ARX mixer, which has
eight mono inputs. The old Rane Swiss Army Mixer has six mono and one stereo
input and might make you happy too; it shows up cheaply on the used market
all the time.

I originally got mine as a cue mixer.
The expand out jack (unfortunately on the back) will drive
a pair of 'phones directly, although not to a very high level.
