There is a newsgroup equivalent to rec.audio.pro called
news:rec.arts.theatre.stagecraft where your question would
be seen by many people working in that field. Recommended.

If there is a community theatre is your area, they likely would
welcome volunteers to "learn the ropes" (literally! :-)

I'd highly recommend such a place as a learning school, too.
Apart from learning a broad range of real-life technical skills you'll get
something equally important over time: people skills, to deal with both
performers and backstage people. Very valuable!
