What are you paying now? There are plenty of providers
who offer effectively unlimited disk space and traffic volume.

Reading over my question I think I miswrote. I did go for a $300 a year
(canadian includes domains) for unmetered bandwidth. And its just fine if
there's only a few visits. But it slows to useless if any significant
traffic occurs. So the bandwidth is worthless if its not there when its
needed. At an ignorant and not terribly informed glance its looking like
I'd need to pay 300 a month for a dedicated server. But it seems like
overkill for whats is essentially a vanity site that doesn't generate
income. Perhaps its just a poor host choice. I don't know whats normal.

Is it dynamic or static traffic? In other words, do you use PHP or
another scripting language?

If it is a thousand people downloading an MP3 file at the same time, you
would need to talk to Akamai. I assume you are not talking about that.

If it is static traffic with only HTML and downloaded files, a few
hundred to a thousand visits is nothing, and any provider with a reasonable
pipe should be able to handle it.

If it is dynamic traffic, then if the code is inefficient then it may
not be possible to find a low-cost system that does it. You would need
to recode things to be more efficient.

I provide such systems for a semi-reasonable cost (i.e. $65 per month)
but we only host for our clients. We also charge an arm and a leg
for support. Most of our clients don't mind paying because they can
actually *get* support. (One said that his experience with free support
showed it is worth just about what you pay for it.)

Yes, actually funny how typing out questions makes me realise how poorly
I've thought them out. Its PHP and mySQL, mainly allows people to register
with email and to download more.

Consider the folks at his.com. You will find yourself paying much less
for more bandwidth, and you can actually call and talk to a real human
being that knows something about the net. With the US dollar dropping
precipitously, it's probably an even better deal for you.

I'm happy with Ipower. One thing they don't tell you is paying for more than
1 year can reduce costs. I have a 2 year renewal.

Going through this myself. My previous host went through email service
"upgrades" for umpteenth time and totally hosed my email accounts.
Anyone trying to contact me via my normal main domain account
discovered I don't exist according to the host. This has been going on
for 6 weeks and trouble tickets / phone support haven't resulted in
anything but frustration. So long to the previous host. I asked around
the local community and had a number recommend GoDaddy.com. I'm going
to give them a try and see how it goes.
