 RECORDING QUESTION
I have noticed that many people record TV shows. They are then
uploaded to the web or the newsgroups or even the bit torrent sites.
The shows look great and what I have seen is that they are almost
always maybe 99% of them Xvid or Dvix format. Does anyone know how
this is done? Can this be done in Vista Media Center? I thought that
VMCE only recorded in the dreaded dvr-ms format. If I am wrong can
anyone show me how to record in Xvid or Dvix via VMCE. If it is not
done via VMCE then I would still like to know how it is done and/or
what program they are using.

As usual thanks in advance...

Sure. First you get a TV or video capture card. The software that comes
with most of them records in standard A/V formats.

Not the preferred route, especially if Vista is like the XP predecessor.

However, VMCE is not the only alternative. Lots of video capture cards
record in industry standard formats like MPG and AVI.

My capture device records in SD MPEG2 format, from there I convert it to
Xvid (AVI) using a few free tools that can be found here ==>

Thanks to both of you for your responses. I was wondering if there
were some suggestions you could make as to what capture software you
are using to record in divx/xvid.

Thanks

Sorry, I only capture in MPEG2. It's handy if I want to make DVD versions of
whatever I capture without any loss in quality, and whilst a bit time
consuming, I find it easy to convert captures to Xvid.

As for capturing in Xvid, you'll need to find a program that's compatible
with your capture device and can record in Xvid or convert to Xvid on the
fly, I've never looked for such a thing. I'd start at your preferred search
engine? Not much help I'm afraid...

Best of luck.

Thanks anyway you have been of much help. I was just curious since
when I see the 100's of TV episodes on the torrent or newsgroups they
are almost exclusively xvid. So I thought there must be some standard
and some program that they all use. I never see the TV episodes in
MPEG2. I am sure that is because of space issues but I was just
curious.

Ah. A basic misunderstanding.

The format you *capture* in is often chosen for compatability and
quality. For that, MPEG2 is good.

AVI, DVix, etc are "good" for posting. And as was pointed out,
conversion is pretty easy.

Recording directly in dvix could require a faster machine or more RAM
for example.

Thanks for the response....
I was just noticing that most or all the files that are on torrents or
wherever are not only xvid but they look really good. Now I record in
Mpeg2 and then convert like others using gordian knot but none and I
mean none of my conversions look like the ones I see and most of their
xvid recordings are even smaller in size than mine. I just wish I knew
how they capture what they use to capture so I can try to duplicate
since everybody seems to be doing the same thing. All those that
upload torrents or to binaries anyway. I just cant get my mpeg2 to be
as clear and sharp as theirs is. The reason for my wanting xvid or
dvix is simple. The file size is much smaller and they have been known
to make them look just as good as DVD format movies on occasion.
